A creeping abyss or someone to find
a priest vowing bliss - waving a flyer.
True pride 'n' hubris is sliding in stride-
A leader a king...  lays deep down inside.

I pat my own back – producing a sharp pain, overcome with said pride and hubris, congratulating myself for being the best at what I do. Alright. So. Yeah. Maybe I am a dishwasher. But can I not feel pride at such a feat? Not everyone in this world can wash dishes as quickly and efficiently as myself. Maybe there are others out there better than me, and maybe their isn't – but I am allowed to take pride in what I do, right?

Thinking hard about this I look over to my friend, my buddy, my pal. A marred face poked and pitted with poxlike scars carving through seas of rusty, crumbling facial hair. Hair that contrasts the black of his head and the blue of his eyes – I pause for a moment and lose myself inside of that sea. I ask "On a scale of one to ten, how high are you right now." Starting to chuckle, his glazed over eyes seems to sparkle knowingly for just an instant – a wonderful contrast to the face itself, almost dismissively says, "One to ten? You can give me a little more credit then that." The smile reveals slightly yellowed teeth and his pinkish pale lips seem to spread so far they reach his nose, a hair too small for his head.

And such my life is defined, surrounded by the rusted crumbling nature of a failing empire. As such I begin with a fragmented poem, move to some dense prose, and end with a lamenting sigh – as the best dishwasher to ever walk the streets of a small college town.

This is nice. I like that you take pride in what you do, not many do. And for that maybe those who see this will feel a little better about themselves. Goodness knows I break glasses every time I do dishes. Lol

I'm not a native speaker of English so I have a hard time to understand this piece...not sure if I understand it correctly, but basically this is a story about "antrophormized-dishwasher", maybe? :p

No :-). It is very complex, even for native english speakers. I am sorry. Its about me. It is about pride. I washed dishes, for money, in college. I pretended I was king.

Does 'delusions of grandeur' translate?

You think I should write more prose? Or you want to just read more of my writings in general?

"One to ten? You can give me more credit than that." ...perfect!

I think you would like Rod McKuen's poem "Camera" (1960's era, couldn't find a good link so here's the text)

I stand just so.
Your camera winks me into permanence
acne scars
tired eyes
wrinkles on my forehead
more naked than I have ever been
(especially to one
I love so very much).

I used to be afraid to look completely real
the sun was just my friend sometimes
when brown from sea and sky made all things right--
always afraid to be anything but young
and envying beauty
even on the face of strangers.

Is this what growing up means
the reality of lighting over public mirrors?
Or is my confidence in love so great
that I worry not
to let you see me at my worst?

Rod McKuen
